What is a mnemonic?

A mnemonic is a learning technique that aids in memory retention and recall. This generator creates mnemonics known as acrostics, where each first letter of the word in a phrase relates to the first letter of the another word. For example, to remember the order of the planets of the solar system we could use the phrase "My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Noodles", where the first letter of each word relates to a planet: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

When are mnemonics or acrostics useful?

Acrostics are particularly useful for remembering lists of information or formulas because they reduce the cognitive load. Rather than memorising the list, you create a vivid image from a single, often wacky, phrase that helps you to more effectively retrieve the information.

How long should an acrostic be?

Shorter acrostics are better for recall; the longer the sentences get the more difficult it is to visualise, and remembering the acrostic becomes more challenging. This generator will generate acrostics of up to 15 words. For longer lists of items you might prefer to use a song or jingle.

Should I use mnemonics or flashcards

While mnemonics are great for memorising single pieces of information that fit in to a category (e.g. "The names of the seven dwarfs" or "wives of Henry VIII"), flashcards are better for remembering associations such as books and their authors or countries and their capitals. All quizzes on Qwhizz that use associations are automatically studyable using flashcards with spaced repetition to help you retain information.
